Pizza Hut on the Corniche

13179047_1084874881551694_1422365991740468271_nSummer has arrived in Jeddah so the hunt is on for cool places to hang out with the family.  A place where parents can enjoy their time as well as the kids!   Pizza Hut on the Corniche may be the answer to please all members of your family.

Pizza Hut on the corniche is located across the street from Fakieh Aquarium and on the corner where Sari Road meets Corniche Road.  This particular Pizza Hut is super-sized so it can comfortably accommodate many families at one time.  The family section is upstairs (they do have an elevator for strollers or physically challenged people).

At the top of the stairs patrons are greeted with an unobstructed view of the beautiful Red Sea!  This is the selling point for the adults.  For the little people in our lives there is a 2 story play area equipped with a huge curling tube slide and electronic token operated rides.  To get the tokens you will need to give money to your server and in return they will bring you a set number of tokens.

Pizza Hut serves more than just pizza.  This particular Pizza Hut has a nice sized salad bar, they offer pasta’s, buffalo wings, cheese sticks, and chicken fingers just to name a few of the unique menu items.  Pizza is of course the specialty of the house—you can choose thin, pan, or classic crust in a variety of flavors to include spicy or cheesy!  Meat toppings include pepperoni and sausage as well as unique meat topping like seafood, chicken and lamb or you always have the option of choosing one of their pre-created pizza’s.

It was a great afternoon having pizza with family and friends.  Everyone was happy with the food, the kids played for a few hours in the play area while the adults visited and watched the stunning sun set.

Pizza Hut does not offer formal birthday party packages for kids—with games and balloons etc.…. However, reservations for parties can be made to accommodate such events and parents can bring in their own cake and decorations while ordering food for everyone off of the menu.

KIDZANIA- Mall of Arabia

UPDATE (Feb 2016):  It has been a little over a year since I first visited Kidzania so I took a second trip back to see if things had changed since my first visit.

The good news is that there are many more “shops” open to the kids.  We were able to go to the pharmacy and make ice-cream this time.

However, many things remained the same.  Many of the shops were not open at the time of our visit so we were limited on the number of activities we could participate in.  In addition, I am still very disappointed in the staff of the facility.  They are very unfriendly to the children.  The children are super excited when they come to Kidzania and the staff act and look like they are bored off their rockers.  They have no excitement, no energy,  no motivation for the kids, don’t tell the kids “job well done”  NOTHING!!!  They are there to pass their time which is so frustrating at a kids activity place.   In addition, they also still don’t speak English to the children even when you tell them that your child does not know Arabic.  Lines are still long and the system is still inefficient

In summary, kids do LOVE the place.  I would recommend going to Kidszania when they offer their “special” rates as I don’t think it is worth the money for the services provided at the normal rate.  Plan on going for the whole day 9am-until evening if possible so you get maximum time to do and try all the activities.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (Jan 2015):

My daughter and I decided to embark on the magical mystery of Kidzania over the holiday.  We arrived at the entrance shortly after 1pm and queued in line.

Kidzos-the official currency of Kidzania
Kidzos-the official currency of Kidzania

Upon making payment, we were handed a map, our boarding pass, and a Kidzos check for 50 Kidzos.  We were told our first stop needed to be the bank to cash the check.  Upon entering the facility, we were transported to the the town of Kidzania.

The city of Kidzania.
The city of Kidzania.

Cobblestone streets and the feel of a modern European city greeted us.  There were light posts, traffic lights, road signs and the firetruck was speeding by on its way back to the firehouse.  Following the street signs, we easily found “The Saudi Investment Bank” and cashed our check.  Since the “Sunsilk” Beauty Salon was close, my daughter decided stop number one need to be getting her hair done.  She walked in and paid her Kidzos while the beautician advised me to “wait outside”.  I found a bench, read a few pages in my book and awaited the exit of my little princess with her amazing new do.

Putting the fire out at the Hotel.

After spending some money, we decided to  get a job and earn some money. She wanted to be a dentist, so we headed up the stairs to the dentist’s office only to discover it was closed.  We headed back down the stairs and went to the firehouse instead.  We had to wait in line for about 20 minutes before my daughter’s group was admitted into the firehouse, where her arm band was scanned and a fire jacket and construction hat were donned.   The kids then sat down to watch a fire safety video, followed by a fire hose practice session.  The kids then boarded the firetruck and were off to fight the blazing fire at the hotel.  Upon returning to the firehouse each child returned the costume and then was paid for their day of work.  So much fun!

Time to try being a dentist again, so back up the stairs we went.  Bummer, the dentist is still not open.  Back down we go to try some grocery shopping at the “Hyperpanda” market.  My daughter simply wanted to do some grocery shopping, but other kids went to Panda to earn money as check out clerks.

Fighting fires and grocery shopping were hard work. Time to eat!  How about learning to make a hamburger from “Burger King”? Once again, we waited in line for about 20 minutes before heading into the Burger King kitchen.  Hair nets, aprons and plastic gloves were made available to impress food safety and hygiene standards on the kids.  The employee gave each child a paper wrapper that was placed on the table as their working surface. She then came around the table with bun bottoms and tongs.  Each child used the tongs to pick their bottom bun.  This was followed by the meat patty (which the kids were not allowed to pick out).  They were instructed on how to properly squirt the ketchup and mustard and then the employee brought around the top bun which each child placed on their burger.  Instructions were given on how to properly fold the wrapper around the burger and voila–the hamburgers were ready for take away, once aprons were removed and hairnets and gloves were in the trash.  We found a nice park bench to sit on, where my daughter was able to enjoy her hand-made burger. (This activity required a Kidzos payment).

Back up to the dentist office—hmmmmm, still closed. Okay, let’s go work at the hospital.  The hospital has two sections.  You either work in the ER and take a ride in the ambulance or you work in the nursery with the babies.  When my daughter’s turn came, she was sent to the nursery.  She really enjoyed bathing, diapering, feeding and caring for her baby in the nursery.  When she was paid again. She was absolutely thrilled and said, “I’m rich”!

“Please Mommy, I want to be a dentist.”  Okay, back up the stairs we go.  Still not open.  We decided to go make a bottle of Coke at the bottling factory.  Once again, it was about a 20 minute wait.  We she finally got into the bottling factory. She was given a Coke apron and instructions on  how to make her personal bottle of Coke.  She checked the plastic bottle, filled it with syrup, carbonation, and water then added a lid and placed it on the conveyer belt where it went through the label machine.  After waiting patiently at the end of the belt, she retrieved her own bottle of Coke.  (This activity also required Kidzos payment)

It was now 5:30pm.  School tomorrow, so time to head home.

My daughter really enjoyed her day, with the exception of having to wait so long for each activity.  I found the system to be really inefficient and the waiting time to be too long.  Many shops that kids can visit only have a single employee. This makes the process of waiting that much longer.  In addition, you had those employees who were busy chatting with each other as opposed to getting ready for the next session and on a few occasions, were more interested in very important text messages that had arrived.  On average we waited 20-35 minutes for most activities, though the employees tell you it “is only 10 minutes”.  It’s not.

Another problem I found was that many of the employees do not speak or refuse to speak English.  I do not expect the programs to be in English, after all this is Saudi Arabia and the national language is Arabic.  However, I made a point to tell each of the employees that my daughter only spoke English in the hopes that they would give her just a bit of direction or educational information in English, but that did not happen.  She was expected to just follow the crowd, so in my opinion, she missed out on a lot of educational opportunities that Kidzania is supposed to offer.  Only Arabic maps of the city are given out when you pay. If you want an English map you need to specifically ask for English.

I found the entry fee for children to be a bit pricey for the limited number of activities available.  I feel it is currently over-priced because half of the shops are not even open.  They advertise a gas station, car wash, a hotel, chocolate shop, candy shop, pizza making, recycling plant, gym and many more that are not available  yet.  Maybe if we would have entered at 10am and were able to do a few more things it might have been worth the money.  Parents (just for entry) also have to pay a stiff fee of 95 SAR.  You are paying 95 SAR simply to be in the facility.  Parents are not allowed in the shops, nor are they allowed to participate in any of the activities with the kids.  Kidzania clearly states that, as with many real-life businesses, there are operating hours and I understand they need to close for employee breaks, but as you read, my daughter REALLY wanted to be a dentist and the shop did not open the entire day. Very frustrating.

I appreciated the kid sized sinks in the restrooms, but found them to be untidy with no toilet paper.  They have the fantastic Dyson hand dryers, so there are no paper towels (a good thing) and regretfully (at least in the lower bathrooms) there are no changing facilities for babies.

What I did really liked about the facility was that everything was local, so it was a real city that kids could be familiar with.  The bank is truly a local business: the flight simulator is from Saudi Airlines, the salon was Sunsilk, and the grocery store was Hyperpanda. This was very cool.  I also liked the idea that kids earn money and then choose to spend it on what they like. When they spend all their money they have to go get a job and earn more before they can do any other activities.   They sell food and drink for adults at either Burger King or Domino’s Pizza.  Both restaurants have small sitting areas.

In summary, I can see the potential of the place but for the amount we have to pay  and the fact that so many things are not open yet. I do not think we will return for another 6 months to a year in hopes that more shops will be open and all the disorganized and inefficient kinks will be worked out.

Sparky’s at Red Sea Mall

Sparky’s at the Red Sea Mall is an indoor amusement park for children.  There are small electronic rocking rides for younger children, a carousel for those a little older and for the big kids: water rides and a small roller coaster.  My daughter is a speed demon so she loves the rides, but sometimes we also go to burn off energy in the soft play area.

Snowy Forest
Snowy Forest play area

There is also a new soft play area that opened during the summer of 2015 called Snowy Forest.  So far, the area is well maintained and reasonably clean although I did notice a few things are already broken.  Children must take off their shoes to go inside.  The fee for the soft play is 75Sar per child and it is valid for the entire day.  Children receive a wrist band and you record your contact info at the desk; this allows parents to shop and if needed the desk will call you while you shop the mall.  Jeddah for Kids does not recommend leaving your child unattended as the play area is not supervised by any adults who make children adhere to rules, safety procedures and being nice to each other. In addition, the front desk staff ONLY SPEAK ARABIC so if there is a problem, communication for non-Arabic speakers is impossible.

Toddler play area in Snowy Forest.

There is also a fantastic toddler area designed for children 18mo-3 years, but because of the lack of supervision some times the wee ones are bullied out of their area by big kids wanting to “destroy”.

Sparky’s also has a small bowling alley (currently under renovation) and has a hair cut booth that looks like it is functional, though I have yet to actually see it open.

Price list for game cards

As with all Sparky’s game centers, having a game card is a must for the electronic rides.  The minimum card to purchase is 135 SAR.  Of course, if you can purchase a bigger card, you will get more “free” games.  For example:  if you purchase the 220 SAR card, your card will actually be loaded with 330 SAR worth of credit.

This Sparky’s has been updated with bright and beautiful new colors so it is user friendly for birthday parties.  The fee for birthday party is 50 SAR per child.  The fee includes use of a decorated party room, 50 SAR in game credit for each child, and large pizzas for sharing.  I believe there is a 25 child minimum required.

Red Sea Beach at Red Sea Mall

Red Sea Beach provides hours of beach fun without the worry of getting a sunburn.  The indoor sand pit and play area are located in the food court of the Red Sea Mall.  The area is clean and well maintained with many sand toys available.  The sand is soft and moist so that children can build with it. In addition to sand toys, they also have spring rides, sea saws and visual tracking games attached to the tables.  Children must remove their shoes to enter the play area.

At the back of the Red Sea Beach is another play area without sand.  There is a reading/puzzle corner, ball pit, computers and super sized Connect Four game.

Back play area.

There are lots of things to keep your child occupied here for several hours.  Children must be supervised, but there is a nice seating area where you can enjoy a coffee or snack while the keeping an eye on your child.  This play area is ideal for children 2-8 years old.  I would recommend taking either a towel or a second set of clothes with you to the “beach” so when your child(ren) are finished playing, they will have something clean to wear.

LOCATION:  Red Sea Mall–back corner of the food court

PRICE:  35 SAR for unlimited play

PHONE:  No phone number is available.

HOURS of OPERATION:  11am until 11pm  Please Note: There was a bit of a language barrier, but the man I spoke with told me it was open everyday at these times.  I would NOT count on it being open on a Friday morning, though.

19th Century Burger–Khaldiyah Branch

(GRAND OPENING MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17th 2014 @ 5pm)

I had the pleasure of being invited to the soft opening of 19th Century Burger in Khaldiyah for dinner.  I must say the burger was delish and the brownie ice-cream Sunday to top off the meal was a home run for this chocolate lover!

Play Room
Play Room

19th Century burger is a family friendly restaurant complete with affordable kids menu, play area and party room.  All items on the kids menu were only 15 SAR per meal with choices of hamburger, nuggets, and chicken burgers.  This restaurant is new so the play area is pristine though I would only recommend the play area for children 5 and under.  They had an indoor Little Tikes gym, an activity table, spring rides and a giant Connect Four game.

Kidzz Cafe

Kidzz Cafe is a fun, family-oriented center for kids located in Roshana Mall on Tahliya Street.  Children can work on Do It Yourself (DIY) crafts, explore online and play challenging games with touch-screen computers, or just play with the toys.
This play center is perfect for children 2-5 yrs old, although children up to 12 would probably enjoy the DIY crafts.
The highlight for me at this venue, was its superior organization!  Everything was well laid out, so you can clearly see what you are getting for your money.  I also liked the Kidi Corner area where parents can sit and have a cup of coffee or snack while watching their children play.

Young Chefs Academy – Jeddah KSA

(Updated August 20, 2018)

The Young Chefs Academy offers  a variety of classes, based on the age of the child.  They offer a parent/tot class for kids around 18 months old and a variety of classes for children up to 12 years old.  They can also be booked for birthday parties. (contact info below)

I recently attended an afternoon class at Young Chefs Academy with my 4-year-old daughter.  We arrived early and paid the 150SAR fee for the class that was to last 2 hours.  The children were escorted upstairs where they were sat at a table, and their lesson began.  The children cooked, colored, decorated a chef’s hat, and decorated their “take home” box.

I found the facility to be clean and well-organized.  My daughter enjoyed her time and made a chocolate chip cookie sandwich filled with Nutella.  My biggest complaint or concern was that we were told that the class would be offered in English and Arabic. This was not really the case.  The Arabic-speaking teacher talked a lot to the Arabic kids, but the Fillipina assistant just gave basic information to our English-speaking children.  I was also disappointed in the amount of cookie that each child got to bring home.  Each child was given a single serving and that was it.  For 150SAR, I expected it to take home at least 4-6 cookies.  Overall, it was a nice experience but for 150SAR per class, this will be something I do only occasionally.

Weekly culinary  classes are available where your child can learn to cook full meals.   For their full and current  schedule of classes being offered please contact them directly.

Young Chef’s also offers a variety of birthday party packages if you are looking to host a unique birthday party!  The info for parties is below.

Thalia Shopping Center

Thalia Shopping Center is a small mall on Thalia Street.  My favorite thing about this mall is they have cars/buggies to rent when you enter.  The small buggies rent for 50SAR/hour or 20SAR/half hour.  The large buggies are 50SAR/hour or 25SAR/half hour.  They have a play center called Imagine Land. To see my review of Imagine Land, please click the link: http://wp.me/p5aXk2-x  My greatest complaint about this shopping center is that there were a lot of people smoking inside the mall.

The following shops are available for children’s clothing, accessories, shoes, etc..:

Bambina J. Dan (formal/fancy girls dresses)

H & M (clothing)

Claire’s (accessories)

Payless Shoe Source

Geox (shoes)

Imagine Land in Tahlia Shopping Center

Imagine Land is a children’s play center located inside Thalia Shopping Center.  It is a typical play center where a card is loaded with an amount of your choosing, and the price of each ride is deducted from your total credit upon entry.

In Imagine Land, the rides range in price from 5-8SAR per ride/per child.  They feature a selection of arcade games, The Toy Wagons, a 5-D Theatre, a soft play area with ball guns and a trampoline cage.  My personal favorite is the trampoline cage, because children are allowed to jump for approximately 30 minutes when entry is purchased.  The soft-play area is well-padded, but the padding is in a bad state of repair.  Another nice feature that some mums might appreciate, is only women operate the rides here.

They do offer a party room, but I was unable to gain more information on it, as the staff have very limited English (Arabic only).

The bathroom in the facility is nice and large, but they do not offer any changing tables for babies.  The do, however, offer a private room with a long bench that could be used for changing or possibly breast feeding.

The minimum cost of a playing card is 50SAR.  As with all play centers the more you spend, the better the “deal”.  If you buy a 100SAR card you get 130SAR in credit, 200SAR gives you 300SAR in credit, 300SAR gives you 500SAR credit, and if you spend 500SAR you get 1000SAR credit.
